Spearfishing Tonga is very excited about including sport fishing charters from their new base at the Blue Water Retreat in Eua Island!
In the past (when Spearfishing Tonga was based from Nukualofa) a fishing trip to Eua Island was only possible on the calmest of days, say one day a week due to the distances needed to be travelled. Now with its new base serious sport fishing enthusiasts can enjoy world class fishing at Eua Island on a daily basis right from their doorstep!
There is a great variety of options available for the fishing enthusiast staying at the Blue Water Retreat. One of our favourite charters includes targeting Pacific sailfish. The sailfish in the Eua region are very plentiful and grow big, and we mean REAL BIG with specimens over 90kg haven been landed. In fact, the IGFA World Record on 24 kg gear (a 95.50 kg specimen) was taken at Eua Island in July 1990. This record still stands today and given that this region has rarely been fished seriously since it is only a matter of time before another line class world record is taken for Pacific sailfish.
The best season for sailfish around Eua Island is from June through to October each year. We have had days before when we have had over 30 strikes per day with specimens over 70 kg in the mix. The same season has world class wahoo over 50 kg available and monster mahi mahi not to mention the occasional Blue Marlin.
A very popular form of sport fishing for some anglers includes jigging for dogtooth tuna, giant trevally and other quality species such as coral trout and green job fish. We have some amazing drop offs and “hot spots” in the GPS and are eager to explore further this form of exciting fishing!
If trolling is your fishing method of choice try your luck at trolling for blue marlin, yellow fin tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo or the legendary dogtooth tuna! The best season for big yellow fin tuna is from October to February whilst the dogtooth can be caught year round.
Our charter vessels and guides are adaptable to most forms of fishing and our experienced staff can show you a variety of fishing hotspots and techniques based on your preferences and skill set. If you’re visiting between mid-June and mid-November (whale season) you might also be able to join us for a whale swim.
It would be fair to say that Spearfishing Tonga is still emerging as a reputable sport fishing Charter Company but we plan to give it our best shot and offer world class sport fishing just as we have with our spearfishing charters for the past six years!
