Cathedral Caves

Created with Sketch.

The Cathedral Caves, located at the northern end of Eua Island has long been regarded as one of the South Pacific’s best SCUBA diving locations. It was first discovered in 2001 and is a popular SCUBA diving location.

It has a huge cathedral and the underwater cave system is about 100 meters long, 50 meters wide and 30 meters deep. There are two entrances, the traditional SCUBA entrance on the ocean side of the caves that is typically used by SCUBA divers.  Here the entrance is at 28 meters and is in a “current prone” area and is thus not suitable for free diving.

Spearfishing Tonga has now pioneered this destination as a suitable and exciting free diving destination. (We leave our spear guns behind and simply explore the beauty of this location). We use a different entrance and approach than the SCUBA divers and only dive this location in calm conditions.

This site has an extensive network of caves that can be enjoyed by experienced free divers. This amazing site is an underwater photographers dream with natural light filtering down to a sandy bottom some 25-30 meters below. The caves have numerous openings and makes for a spectacular break from the spearfishing or whale swim activities. Crayfish can be found in amongst the cave system.

During whale season we will be operating 3 charter vessels. Both Tongan Explorer and Ika Lahi will be engaged in whale swim activities whilst our new “pride and joy” Eua Explorer will be utilized for both fishing (sportfishing and spearfishing) as well as general island tours to visit the spectacular caves and blowholes. These scenic tours will be a welcome addition to our charters and will run as both half days tours and also full days tours. The full day tours can involve the circa navigation of Eua island.
